Social Media vs. Reality

I recently had the chance to create a couple new social media pages for my campaign and in doing so, was amazed at the algorithms which direct me to Follow/Like/Share content focused on what each prior choice had been. It was an "a-ha" moment for me because for years, I have marveled at how far some people will go down a rabbit hole chasing different conspiracy theories and seem to be losing touch with reality.

Don't get me wrong. I am not stating that my personal news outlets or social media feeds come without bias or designs around certain narratives. For this very reason, I try to diversify my news, my media, & other digital intake. Following outlets I don't always agree with with or even find laughable based on either the subtle or major extremes of different opinion, it allows me to make a more informed decision as to what I am willing to believe/accept.

I wish there was a way to ensure a moderate balance of all opinions to help reduce the extremes that hurt our ability to work together but in today’s digital world, if you don’t consciously & deliberately make a choice to hear what the opposition thinks, says or is willing to fight for, then you may find yourself in a self-created bubble of false narratives, alternative facts, and biased truths that negatively impact the values and standards you hold yourself and other accountable to.
